The Space Density of Intermediate-redshift, Extremely Compact, Massive Starburst Galaxies

چکیده
We present a measurement of the intrinsic space density intermediate redshift ($z\sim0.5$), massive ($M_{*} \sim 10^{11} \ \text{M}_{\odot}$), compact ($R_{e} 100$ pc) starburst ($\Sigma_{SFR} 1000 \text{M}_{\odot} \text{yr}^{-1} \text{kpc}^{-1}$) galaxies with tidal features indicative them having undergone recent major mergers. A subset host kiloparsec scale, $>1000 \text{km}\ \text{s}^{-1}$ outflows and have little indication AGN activity, suggesting that extreme star formation can be primary driver large-scale feedback. Extremely compact massive galaxies at z ∼ 1 . 4
The optical rest–frame sizes of 10 of the most massive (∼5×1011h70−2M⊙) galaxies found in the near–infrared MUNICS survey at 1.2<z<1.7 are analysed. Sizes were estimated both in the J and K’ filters. These massive galaxies are at least a factor of 4 −1.0 (±1 σ) smaller in the rest–frame V–band than local counterparts of the same stellar mass. Consequently, the stellar mass density of these obje...
متن کاملExtremely Compact Massive Galaxies at 1.7 < Z < 3
We measure and analyse the sizes of 82 massive (M ≥ 10M⊙) galaxies at 1.7 ≤ z ≤ 3 utilizing deep HST NICMOS data taken in the GOODS North and South fields. Our sample provides the first statistical study of massive galaxy sizes at z > 2. We split our sample into disk–like (Sérsic index n ≤ 2) and spheroid– like (Sérsic index n > 2) galaxies, and find that at a given stellar mass, disk–like gala...
متن کاملCompact Stellar Systems in the Fornax Cluster: Super-massive Star Clusters or Extremely Compact Dwarf Galaxies?
We describe a population of compact objects in the centre of the Fornax Cluster which were discovered as part of our 2dF Fornax Spectroscopic Survey. These objects have spectra typical of old stellar systems, but are unresolved on photographic sky survey plates. They have absolute magnitudes –13 < M B < –11, so they are 10 times more luminous than any Galactic globular clusters, but fainter tha...
متن کاملMassive star clusters in dwarf starburst galaxies
I will discuss the presence of massive star clusters in starburst galaxies with an emphasis on low mass galaxies outside the local group. I will show that such galaxies, with respect to their mass and luminosity, may be very rich in young luminous clusters.
متن کاملThe DEEP3 Galaxy Redshift Survey: the impact of environment on the size evolution of massive earlytype galaxies at intermediate redshift
Using data drawn from the DEEP2 and DEEP3 Galaxy Redshift Surveys, we investigate the relationship between the environment and the structure of galaxies residing on the red sequence at intermediate redshift. Within the massive (10 < log10(M /h−2 M ) < 11) earlytype population at 0.4 < z < 1.2, we find a significant correlation between local galaxy overdensity (or environment) and galaxy size, s...
